Cloudy conditions, showers and thunderstorms will affect much of Panama on Sunday, with the strongest weather expected across the country’s western provinces, according to the Instituto de Meteorología e Hidrología de Panamá.

IMHPA’s first forecast update for September 27 was issued at 12:02 a.m. by forecaster Maria Cosme.

On the Caribbean slope, scattered rain is forecast during the morning in Colón and Guna Yala. From the afternoon into the evening, moderate to strong rain and thunderstorms are expected between Bocas del Toro and northern Veraguas. Isolated thunderstorms are possible elsewhere, accompanied by occasional strong gusts.

On the Pacific slope, isolated thunderstorms may affect eastern Panamá province, Darién and the Emberá regions during the morning. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms could become strong from Chiriquí through southern Veraguas, while more isolated activity is forecast across central and eastern areas.

Daytime temperatures will generally reach 28-32°C outside the Central Mountain Range, where highs of 19-24°C are expected.

Waves are forecast at 0.60-0.91 metres in the Caribbean and 0.61-1.30 metres in the Pacific. The ultraviolet index will range from 3 to 8, representing moderate to very high exposure.

An official weather watch remains in effect through 11:59 p.m. Sunday because of tropical wave No. 48, the monsoon trough and high atmospheric moisture. Saturated ground increases the risk of rapid river rises, localized flooding and landslides, particularly where heavy rain develops.
