A channel of seawater has separated part of Isla Cañas from the rest of the island following Panama’s October 9 earthquake, with geologists pointing provisionally to erosion and displaced sand as the explanation.

The change affects the island in Tonosí district, Los Santos province. Its cause still requires field investigation, according to University of Panama specialists interviewed by La Prensa for a report published October 19.

Geologists Julissa Sanjur and Alex Cueva explained that the island consists largely of sedimentary material that currents can remove and redistribute. Their preliminary assessment suggests seawater washed away deposits, opening the channel now visible in images.

The observations do not establish that an earthquake fault physically split the island. Satellite comparisons reveal changes in water distribution, but cannot alone determine what happened beneath the surface.

Sanjur said the separated sections should not be expected to reconnect quickly. Whether the island regains its earlier shape will depend on coastal processes that remain under study.

Isla Cañas is also an important wildlife refuge. The Environment Ministry identifies its beaches as nesting grounds for olive ridley and green sea turtles. The ecological consequences of the new channel have yet to be established.
