Panama can expect periods of rain and thunderstorms on Saturday, September 26, with the strongest activity forecast for mountainous areas and communities near the Central Mountain Range.

The Instituto de Meteorología e Hidrología de Panamá issued its first forecast update at 1:06 a.m. Forecaster Pilar Lopez warned that some storms could become very strong and produce lightning and gusty winds.

On the Caribbean slope, rain is expected near the coast during the morning, with incursions into Guna Yala and Colón. Moderate to very strong thunderstorms could develop during the afternoon, particularly over mountainous areas.

Heavy activity may persist from western Colón to Bocas del Toro during the evening and overnight. IMHPA identifies a risk of rapid rises in rivers and streams, localized flooding and landslides.

On the Pacific side, isolated morning showers are possible in Darién and along coastal waters. More widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected from Coclé through Chiriquí during the afternoon and evening, with the strongest activity near the Central Mountain Range. Other Pacific areas may receive isolated or scattered showers of varying intensity.

Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach 29-32°C in lower areas and 18-24°C in the mountains. Overnight temperatures should fall to 23-25°C, or 14-22°C at higher elevations.

A significant-rainfall watch remains in effect through 11:59 p.m. Sunday. IMHPA says Tropical Wave No. 48, the monsoon trough and high atmospheric moisture are maintaining unstable conditions. The watch is precautionary and should not be interpreted as a nationwide emergency warning.
