A relatively dry morning will give way to widespread afternoon showers and thunderstorms across Panama’s Pacific slope on Friday, according to the country’s official weather service.

The Instituto de Meteorología e Hidrología de Panamá issued its first forecast for September 25 at 1:14 a.m. Forecaster Abdiel Vásquez expects the strongest afternoon storms in Panamá Norte, Darién, Coclé, the Azuero Peninsula, Veraguas and Chiriquí.

Early rain and thunderstorms should remain mostly over Pacific waters, although some activity may reach coastal Chiriquí, southern Azuero, the Gulf of Panama and the coastline around metropolitan Panama City, Panamá Este and Panamá Oeste.

Morning cloud cover should gradually decrease, allowing daytime heating and high moisture levels to generate more extensive storms later in the day. Rain over land should diminish during the evening, although showers may continue near the Gulf of Chiriquí.

The Caribbean slope should remain mostly dry during the morning. Isolated afternoon showers are forecast for Colón, Bocas del Toro, northern Veraguas and the Ngäbe-Buglé region. More persistent rain may develop over Bocas del Toro and Ngäbe-Buglé at night.

Maximum temperatures will range from 23°C to 30°C, with elevated heat-index values during the day. UV levels are forecast between moderate and very high.

An official watch for rain and thunderstorms remains valid until 11:59 p.m. on September 25\. IMHPA warns of possible sudden rises in waterways, strong localized wind gusts and falling trees or unsecured objects. Marine conditions are generally favorable, but may deteriorate rapidly near thunderstorms.
