Scattered thunderstorms and potentially strong afternoon downpours are forecast across much of Panama on Friday, October 2, with an official preventive advisory remaining active nationwide.

The Instituto de Meteorología e Hidrología de Panamá published its first forecast update at 12:48 a.m. The report was prepared by forecaster Rafael Morán.

On the Caribbean slope, the morning should remain largely free of significant rain. Moderate to heavy afternoon downpours are expected in Bocas del Toro, Costa Abajo in Colón, northern Veraguas and northern Ngäbe-Buglé. Moderate rain is also possible in Guna Yala. Some rain may continue around Bocas del Toro and northern Ngäbe-Buglé during the evening.

Along the Pacific, early rain may move inland from maritime areas around southern Veraguas, southern Azuero, Panamá Oeste, Panamá and Darién. Afternoon thunderstorms could become moderate to strong across Chiriquí, Ngäbe-Buglé, Veraguas, Azuero and Coclé. More variable downpours are forecast for Panamá Oeste, Panamá and Darién.

Maximum temperatures will generally reach 29°C to 31°C in lower areas, with highs of 20°C to 25°C along the Central Mountain Range. Mountain temperatures could fall to 13°C overnight.

Winds will mostly remain between 5 and 15 km/h, but gusts may reach 40 km/h on the Pacific side. Waves of 0.8 to 1.2 metres are forecast on both coasts.

Sinaproc’s preventive advisory remains effective through 11:59 p.m. Saturday. Saturated soils in southern Veraguas, the Chiriquí highlands, Bocas del Toro and Ngäbe-Buglé increase the possibility of flash flooding and landslides.
