Metro de Panamá and Doppelmayr Panamá have signed a $255.2 million contract to design and build an urban cable-car system connecting communities in Panama City and San Miguelito.

The agreement was formalized on September 28 after both parties completed a joint review of the contractual documents. It represents another procedural step toward construction, but work cannot begin solely on the basis of the signature.

The contract will now be sent to Panama’s Comptroller General for review and endorsement. Metro de Panamá did not announce a confirmed construction start or opening date.

The planned system will extend approximately 6.6 kilometres and contain six stations: Balboa, Cincuentenario, Samaria, Mano de Piedra, Valle de Urracá and Torrijos Carter.

Passengers will be able to transfer to Line 2 of the Panama Metro at Cincuentenario. The cable-car system is also intended to connect with other parts of the capital’s public-transport network.

According to information released by Metro de Panamá, the system is designed to operate at up to six metres per second and carry approximately 2,800 passengers per hour in each direction.

The contract awarded to Doppelmayr Panamá is valued at $255,163,788.03\. Its scope includes design work, complementary studies, construction, equipment manufacturing and installation, system integration, testing, certification and delivery of the completed network. It also includes an option for maintenance.

The project is primarily intended to serve densely populated communities in San Miguelito where steep terrain, limited road capacity and heavy traffic make conventional transport difficult.

Although the contract has now been signed, the Comptroller’s endorsement remains an essential condition before the project can advance into execution.
