Michael Amir Murillo scored for Beşiktaş and Andrés Andrade captained LASK against Liverpool as Panamanian internationals featured prominently in this week’s European club competitions.
Murillo opened the scoring in Beşiktaş’s 3–2 victory away to Germany’s Hoffenheim on Thursday, October 15, in the second round of the Europa League’s league phase.
The defender struck in the 60th minute following a scramble in the penalty area. After Hoffenheim equalized, South Korean forward Hyeongyu Oh scored twice to help secure the Turkish club’s victory.
Murillo had also scored against his former club, Olympique de Marseille, in Beşiktaş’s opening league-phase match. His latest contribution extended that scoring run to two successive rounds, adding an attacking dimension to his defensive duties.
A night earlier in Austria, Andrade wore LASK’s captain’s armband against Liverpool in the Champions League. The Panamanian defender completed the match, which the English visitors won 6–3.
Andrade, LASK’s vice-captain, led the side in the absence of Sascha Horvath. His leadership assignment came during a difficult evening for the Austrian club, which trailed 3–0 at halftime.
Bradley Barcola scored a hat-trick for Liverpool. LASK responded through Robert Ljubičić and two goals from Florian Flecker, but the comeback was insufficient to threaten the visitors’ advantage.
Two other Panamanians were involved in Wednesday’s Champions League programme. Cristian “Fulo” Martínez and César Blackman started for Slovan Bratislava in its 3–0 home defeat against Stuttgart.
The matches placed four Panamanian players in starting roles across the Champions League and Europa League during the same week. For Murillo, the round brought another goal and a victory; for Andrade, it brought the responsibility of leading his club against one of European football’s most established teams.
