Trunks and branches obstructing Mata Oscura beach are complicating sea-turtle nesting, while businesses along the community’s Eco-Ruta Tortuga face closures and lost visitors following the October earthquake.

In an October 30 report, TVN documented the pressures facing the coastal community in Mariato, southern Veraguas, where conservation work forms part of a wider network of local tourism enterprises.

Nest-patrol member Diego Ábrego told TVN that accumulated debris could push turtles towards other beaches. That remains a concern raised by the conservation team, rather than a confirmed long-term shift in nesting.

The report records 180 nests relocated during the 2026 season: 175 olive ridley nests and five hawksbill nests.

The local response is led by Fundación Agua y Tierra, whose work combines turtle protection with community development. Its programmes include environmental education, volunteer fieldwork and scientific monitoring of nesting and hatchlings.

The foundation’s biologists also oversee a hatchery used to rescue and relocate threatened nests.

Eco-Ruta Tortuga links that conservation work with community activities and local culture. Panama’s Tourism Authority recognized the experience in its 2023 competition for innovative community tourism, where Mata Oscura’s entry won the overall award.

TVN reports that the route now brings together 20 enterprises. Some have suspended activities because of damage, while others have lost customers.

Among those affected is Artesanías Cataleya, where the home containing its kitchen collapsed. Visitors had previously bought traditional sweets and crafts there.

The Turtle Experience Centre is also serving as a collection point for assistance to earthquake-affected communities, according to TVN.

The report provides no confirmed reopening timetable for the affected businesses.
