Android users in Panama can receive earthquake alerts through Google’s built-in warning system, which may provide a few seconds to take protective action before stronger shaking arrives.

Panama appears on Google’s official list of supported countries. TVN highlighted the feature on October 29, although the sources reviewed do not establish when it first became available locally.

The system detects earthquakes already underway. Outside parts of the United States, it combines signals from smartphone motion sensors to identify shaking and estimate an earthquake’s location and size.

Google says notifications are issued for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater, with the alert type depending on the shaking expected at the recipient’s location.

Less urgent notifications provide information about lighter shaking. The most urgent “Take Action” alert can override Do Not Disturb settings, illuminate the screen and play a loud sound.

Users can check the feature under **Settings → Safety & emergency → Earthquake alerts**. On some devices, the setting appears under **Location → Advanced → Earthquake alerts**.

Google says alerts are enabled by default, but users should check their device. Wi-Fi or mobile data must be switched on to receive them.

The system has limits. Not every earthquake can be detected, estimates of magnitude and shaking intensity can contain errors, and notifications may arrive before, during or after shaking begins.

An alert therefore offers a possible opportunity to respond, rather than a guarantee of advance warning.

Opening a notification displays an estimated earthquake location and magnitude, alongside protective guidance such as dropping, taking cover and holding on. The strongest alert is intended to prompt immediate action when potentially damaging shaking is expected.
